    Cora Holder Pickering

    October 23, 1939 - April 14, 2022

    Cora Holder Pickering, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 14, 2022. Cora was born on October 23, 1939, in Georgetown, British Guiana, South America. She was the eldest of eight children born to Beryl Holder Cummings and William Ernest Charles. She was raised from infancy by grandparents John and Elvira Holder, and her aunt & Godmother Eileen Holder. Cora was trained in midwifery providing services for many in British Guiana. She graduated as a Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife in British Guiana. In the United States, Cora earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Hospital Administration from St. Joseph’s College, a Master of Science degree in Mental Health from CW Post University. And a second master’s degree in special education from Bank Street Educational College. Over a 42-year career in the United States, Cora practiced nursing and Hospital Administration in a variety of venues including: Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital in Alboin NY, the New York City prison health system, Peninsula Hospital Nursing Home & Rehabilitation, New York State Psychiatric Hospitals, Children’s Division, and consulted for the New York State Department of Health. Cora provided her patients and clients with excellent care and shared the love of her Lord Jesus with them. Along with countless people who loved and respected her, Cora will be mourned by her son Jubert Carl Pickering who is in a nursing home recuperating from a stroke, granddaughter Deandrea Lynn Cassell, great-grandson Kaden Cassel, her siblings, cousins, family and friends. Cora asked that thanks be given to: the Plymouth Brethren assemblies in New York, Georgia and Guyana, the Carmel Hills Retirement Community Staff, the many churches, family and friends that prayed for her. In lieu of flowers, it was Sister Cora’s desire that donations be made to Carmel Hills Retirement Community or the Siloam Bible Camp in Demerara, Guyana via The Fund for Christian Service.
