Darwin Tip Johnson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Darwin Tip Johnson, 86, went home to be with his Savior on February 11, 2022. Originally from Winston-Salem, NC, Tip has resided in Charlotte, NC for over 50 years. The son of the late Lonnie Lee and Bertha Mae Wright Johnson, Tip was preceded in death by Patricia Kelly Johnson, his wife of 59 years, the love of his life. He is survived by his children: Beth Medders (Russell), Sharon Weeks (Gaither), both of Boone, NC, Karen Riffle (Cecil) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Darwin Johnson (Lisa) of Charlotte, NC, 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law, Dr. David Kelly of Winston-Salem and numerous nieces and nephews. Tip was also preceded in death by his siblings; Vincent Johnson (Dorcas), Arnette Newsome(W.B.), Alda Mae Johnson, Jessie Milner (Hugh), Josie Walker (Charles), Elam Johnson (Pansy), and Lonnie Johnson (Lucy). After graduating from Wake Forest University and serving in the US Army, Tip had a 30 year career with Southern Bell. His retirement years were filled with volunteering, mentoring, travel, and most of all, family. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to The Hope Fund, at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 2027 Emerywood Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210 or Medi - Hospice, 400 Shadowline Drive, Suite 101, Boone, NC 28607. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, N.C., beginning at 2 pm. There will be a private graveside service for the family on Sunday. Arrangements are under the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel.
