Dr. Godfrey Jackson Gyapong

May 16, 1954 - January 15, 2022

Dr. Godfrey Jackson Gyapong, Ph. D., also known as Kwame Pong and Goddy passed away suddenly on January 15th, 2022 at the age of 67, in Charlotte North Carolina, USA. Godfrey was born to Akwasi Pong (Godfrey Jackson Gyapong Sr.) and Ama Dufie (Hagar Brako) on May 16th, 1954 in Kumasi, Ghana. Dr. Godfrey Gyapong was a man of exceptional intelligence. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics at the University of Science and Technology in Ghana. He then attended the University of New Brunswick, in Canada, where he obtained his Master’s degree in Physics. He then completed his doctorate degree in Nuclear Physics at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. He subsequently completed several research and postdoctoral teaching and research positions in Europe and the United States. After working as a researcher for many years, he switched gears, working as an Information Systems Engineer in Charlotte North Carolina for just over 20 years. Godfrey was many things; a father, a husband, an uncle, a friend, and an advisor, but ultimately, he was a kind and generous man. He took the leadership role in his extended family to ensure the health, wealth, peace, and well-being of the entire family. His loving heart was a beacon of light for all and he often went above and beyond to help and show kindness to family, friends, and even strangers. He would have given the shirt off his back to help anyone without hesitation and done so humbly. Godfrey’s bright smile and laugh were infectious. His cheerful attitude and bright smile will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Godfrey was a music enthusiast who enjoyed jazz, the blues, and highlife music. Occasionally he was found in the art scenes of Charlotte attending concerts by national and international artists. Godfrey is survived by his wife Nana Tiwaah, his daughters Dr. Eugenia Gyapong, Pharm. D, and Dr. Sylvia Gyapong, M.D, as well as several family members and friends, to whom he meant so much. His loving wife was his joy and his daughters were his world. Godfrey was an incredible example of what a husband and a father should be. Even though our hearts are broken, we know that he is in a better place and we will see him again one day. Well done dear Godfrey, “DAYIE!” Funeral and burial service will be held on Saturday February 5th, 2022 at Heritage Funeral and Cremation Services 3700 Forrest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC, 28104. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM with funeral services to follow at 1:30PM. The funeral service will be live streamed on the funeral homes website.
