James "Jim" Campbell Smith

February 19, 1938 - November 1, 2021

Kure Beach, NC Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather James "Jim" Campbell Smith, age 83 passed suddenly on Nov 1, 2021 at New Hanover Medical Center of complications from a fall. James Campbell Smith was born in Yonkers NY to John Forgie Smith and Helen Dower Smith February 19, 1938. An only child, Jim graduated Roosevelt High School with honors and attended NYU. He worked his entire career in elevator engineering design, construction, and maintenance in New York City, most notably the construction of the elevator system in the World Trade Center Twin Towers in NYC. Working for Otis Elevator and Dover Elevator throughout NYC, Jim knew the entire city well and loved the culture, energy, and people of the city. With his intelligent precise methods coupled with quick wit and great personality, Jim served on many boards and committees through his life in New York, New Jersey and his retirement home of Kure Beach NC. The center of Jim's life was family, all from marrying the love and light of his life, Priscilla. Jim and Priscilla married, settled into life with 2 daughters in Yonkers for a few years, then moved to the suburbs of NJ to raise a family. After their successful careers in NYC, Jim and Priscilla built a beach home in Kure Beach, NC enjoying their retirement at the ocean with grandchildren happily visiting often and creating the "energy" that "Papa" loved so much. Jim is survived by his wife of 61 years Priscilla Smith, daughter Connie Sherwin (Matt) of Collierville TN and daughter Heather Joyner (Mark) of Charlotte NC. Jim was beloved and doting "Papa" to 4 grandchildren, Erin Sherwin of Lexington KY, Courtney Joyner, Scott Joyner, and Benjamin Joyner of Charlotte NC. He was a wonderful presence in our lives and we miss him every day. Funeral will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church 8515 Rea Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173 at 11:00 am family and friends are welcome. Due to covid restrictions there will not be a formal receiving. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's name to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.
