April 28, 1928 - August 24, 2021
Ms. Jean Agner Morgan, 93, of Matthews, passed away on August 24th, 2021 at her residence after a period of declining health. Lively, friendly, and caring, Jean was born on April 28, 1928 in Charlotte to the late Ernest and Ruth Leonard Agner. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a graduate of Harding High School, Lenoir Rhyne College and Appalachian State University. A love of children and learning led Jean to a nearly 30-year career with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a second grade teacher and a media specialist. Following retirement in 1990, Jean was an active volunteer with a number of area organizations including the Shepherd’s Center, SHIIP, and the library at Matthews Glen Retirement Community. Spending time with family was paramount for Jean. An exceptional mother, she was very close to her children and reveled in her role as Grandma. She delighted in her friends, cooking, and with a strong competitive streak, she loved playing games and cards, especially Bridge and Canasta. Jean relished traveling and enjoyed the North and South Carolina beaches and many destinations in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her sister, Danay Agner Gardner, brother-in-law Thomas Gardner, and her son-in-law, Faw Brittain. Jean is survived by her daughters, Barbara Morgan of Northampton, MA, Susan Morgan Jones (David) of Lexington, NC and Teresa Morgan Brittain, of Connelly Springs, NC, grandchildren Allison Jones of Lexington, Philip Jones (Katy) of Watertown, MA, and Morgan Brittain (Olivia) of High Point, nieces Evelyn Smith and Rhonda Barrett (Xavier) of Greensboro, great nephew Richard Smith (Nicole) of Los Angeles, CA, several special cousins and many cherished friends and card-playing partners. For the outstanding attention and friendship provided to Jean over the past several months, her family would like to especially thank Nurse Theresa and the staff of the care and therapy teams and also Jean’s fellow residents of Magnolia Lane in Willow Brooke Court at Matthews Glen. A private graveside service of celebration and thanksgiving for Jean’s life will be held at Union Lutheran Church, Salisbury, NC with Jean’s cousin Pastor Robert G. Young, officiating. Memorials may be sent to The Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte, NC, 28203 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
