December 7, 1958 - June 14, 2021
Dr. Jess Alan Usher passed away peacefully on June 14, 2021 at his home in Chula, Ga. after a vigilant battle with cancer. He was 62. The youngest child of the late R. Alton and Juanita Kreeger Usher, Jess was born December 7, 1958 in Savannah, Ga. As a teenager, he moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. where he graduated from Reynolds High School. After owning and operating a life-safety company and then a local golf shop, Jess’ love for learning led him to return to college, earning his B.A. in History from Winston-Salem State University. He further earned a History M.A. and American History Ph.D. from UNC-Greensboro. He served as a full-time instructor at WSSU and offered courses at Bennett College prior to accepting a professorship at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. While at ABAC, Jess was a dedicated professor who consistently demonstrated distinction in his teaching, mentoring, and outreach to traditionally underserved students. His compassion and engaging personality endeared him to his students as well as his colleagues. He formed lasting friendships with fellow faculty who graciously encouraged and supported him throughout his final battle. Jess embodied an unbridled passion for life—in the classroom, in the community, with his family and friends, and pursuing his hobbies of fishing and golf. He was unflinchingly resolute and zealous in his advocacy for human rights and equality. He worked tirelessly to make a difference, to be an instrument of peace and justice, and to empower others to do the same. He was a voice for the voiceless. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. Jess leaves behind, to forever cherish his memory, his brother Bob, brother Steve, stepsons, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and a great-nephew, as well as many dear and close friends, and faithful dog Weezie. A bright light in our lives now shines forever in Heaven. “Well done, good and faithful servant!” [Matthew 25:21] A service to celebrate the life of Jess will be held on Friday, June 25, at 2 p.m.at Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Jess Usher Memorial Fund at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Box 13, 2802 Moore Highway, Tifton, GA 31793 or www.abac.edu/jessusher.
