Joan T. Baker

Joan Tarlton Baker, 88, formerly of Stallings, NC passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2022. She was born May 1, 1934 to John Vernon Tarlton and Bessie Wayne Parker Tarlton in Union County NC. She was preceded in death by her one brother Gene Tarlton of Olmsted Ohio. Joan graduated from Wingate College, worked at Wingate College as the President’s secretary, and married her husband of 64 years in 1957. Following their relocation to Stallings NC, Joan worked as a stay at home Mom and caregiver to her mother who lived with them until her death in 1980. Joan reentered the workforce as a secretary at Indian Trail Elementary School and remained until her retirement. Joan and husband Richard lived in the same home in Stallings NC from 1963 until 2019 when they moved to Taylor Glen in Concord. Joan was very active at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church serving in a variety of roles from 1965 until 2019 and greatly enjoyed her time of service there including leading the Agape Group. Joan is survived by her husband of 64 years, a daughter Monica Baker Cain (Bill), and a son Richard Elliott Baker Jr. (Pam), five grandchildren Elizabeth Cain Williams, Spencer Cain, Samuel Cain, Patrick Baker, and Rebecca Baker Blankenship, great granddaughter Aria Williams and great grandson Elias Williams. A visitation will be Friday, May 20,2022 at 10:00AM with the funeral service at 11:00 at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, 3316 Pleasant Plains Rd., Matthews, NC 28105. Rev. Ron Riddley and Rev. Bill Cain will be officiating the service. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, 3316 Pleasant Plains Rd., Matthews, NC 28105.
