John Hurst Pender Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

John Hurst Pender passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at the age of 92. John, son of Paul S. Pender and Augusta Hurst was born on May 25, 1930 in Granite City, Illinois. He attended Granite City schools and graduated from St. Louis University in 1957. John’s business career extended over 50 years, included work in the venture capital industry, assistant to the President of Union Pacific Corporation, and as senior vice-president of the Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) for 17 years. He was also chairman of the Board of Trustees of AAL’s Mutual Fund Affiliate, and President of the Funds. He especially valued his many friends and coworkers from his years spent at AAL and in Appleton, WI. John was a founder and First-President of the St. Louis Patron’s Foundation at age 24, along with Samuel Davis, son of Dwight Davis, donor of the Davis Cup. Other civic activities included President of the Paine Museum, Oshkosh, WI; Director of the Hillwood Museum, Washington, DC; Member of the Wisconsin Humanities Committee; Director of Appleton, WI, Memorial Hospital; Director of Appleton, WI, Development Committee; Trustee of Carthage College, Kenosha, WI; and Director and President of the Appleton, WI, Arts Alliance. John is predeceased by his son David Pender and his brother Paul Pender. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested for the Shriners Hospital of Greenville, SC.
