Max Elvin Royer passed away September 22, 2021, at Novant Hospital Matthews from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Max was born on April 8, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa as the only son of Merlin and June Royer. Max grew up on the family dairy farm near Perry, Iowa and attended schools at Waukee and The Washington Township Consolidated School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from McPherson College in Kansas and with a master’s degree from Western Michigan University. Max worked at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor and the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan in a pharmaceutical research career spanning 37 years. Max was a kind and quiet man who enjoyed learning new things and meeting new people. Max married his college sweetheart, Miriam Arlene Long, in 1958, and they were happily married for 63 years. Together they shared many interests including traveling, gardening and raising their family. They were dedicated members of the Church of the Brethren and later the United Methodist Church. After living for 48 years in Portage, Michigan, Max and Miriam moved to Matthews, North Carolina in 2009 to be near their daughter and her family. Max was an avid fisherman and enjoyed taking on a wide range of building and repair projects. He was a lifelong member of various choirs and loved singing tenor or baritone across a variety of musical genres. He was loved by many for his fun-loving, friendly nature. Max is survived by his wife, Miriam, son Bryan Royer (wife Kathy), daughter Brenda Tate (husband Philip) and five grandchildren: Ben Royer (wife Nansy), Amanda Royer, Peter Royer, Meredith Tate Scott (husband Trent) and Morgan Tate. Max has one sister, Joyce Guinn.
