Peifeng "Jim" Hsu Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

We are here to remember the life of Peifeng “Jim” Hsu, who passed away on June 20, 2022, after living with Alzheimer’s during the last two years of his life. He lived a good 90 years! Jim’s story is a story of God’s love. God protected him during all his travails showing him mercy and grace throughout his life. As an orphan and deprived child, he always found opportunities for advancement. Jim was born on December 25,1931 in a rural area outside of Guiyang, in the Guizhou province of China. The oldest of three children, one of whom died early, he and his sister became orphans at an early age and were raised by relatives. His younger sister remains in China today. Life was hard in China in those days, and whether by conviction or necessity, he joined the Chiang Kai-Shek army. As the Communists took over China, Jim, along with many young soldiers, fled to Vietnam and then to the island of Formosa (Taiwan) where he settled in Taipei, Taiwan. Jim was a liberal arts man who loved calligraphy, literature, and world history and geography. His Chinese calligraphy was so beautiful that often his acquaintances would ask him to write texts for them. In Taipei, he was admitted to and graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University, which is remarkable for someone who did not have formal schooling. In Taiwan, Jim worked as a high school teacher, but always had an entrepreneurial spirit which led him to open a profitable merchandise store and later four restaurants in the United States. In Taiwan, Jim met and married his wife Maco Lee and remained married for 55 years. Jim, the adventurer, having fled to Vietnam and then crossing the seas to Taiwan, embarked on crossing the ocean once again to America. With God’s guidance, he worked hard at pursuing a better quality of life for himself and his young family. In 1975, Jim and Maco had the opportunity to emigrate to the United States with their three little daughters. Their 4th child Carlos was born in New York City. In the United States, the family lived in New York City, South Williamsport and Lewisburg, PA and then in Weirton, West Virginia before finally settling down in Charlotte in 1984. Our father did not necessarily know it, but God had guided him to Charlotte, and it is here where he found peace to permanently settle the family. The industrious Hsu family founded Imperial Capital Chinese Restaurant located on Eastway Drive and later opened Imperial Capital II in Matthews, NC. Jim was always a hard worker which contributed to the success of his business. He was a wonderful cook since young, and many Charlotteans enjoyed his savory dishes at his restaurants. He brought a taste of culture to the masses in Charlotte. In his older years and spare time, Jim enjoyed horseback riding, golfing, fishing, ballroom dancing, domestic and international traveling, and took classes to improve his English. Jim was a very private man. The years of deprivation in his youth made him a reserved man, but he understood the meaning of hard work and perseverance, and the importance of family and higher education. More importantly, he understood God’s grace upon him. We will always remember how a few times in his Alzheimer’s state of mind, his mind traveled to be with God as he kept saying: “Thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus." Jim was a member of Shamrock Chinese Baptist Church in Charlotte and Carmel Baptist Church Chinese Ministry in Matthews. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Maco Lee Hsu and loving children, three daughters Danielle Thomas (Tim), Katie Cornejo (Favio), Angelini Nuzzo, and son Carlos Hsu (Christine). He is also survived by his seven adoring grandchildren: Alexa, Alyssa, Isabela, Ashley, Logan, Luke, and Levi.
