August 7, 1929 - November 25, 2021
Thomas Henry Moore, Sr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 25, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was 92. Tom was a rare Matthews native, born August 7, 1929 to Floyd and Katherine Moore. He grew up on the family’s dairy Farm on Moore Road, graduating from Matthews High School and then N.C. State University. He spent his life in Matthews, marrying his wife Anne, having two children, and surrounding himself on the family farm with the people and things he loved most. Tom retired from the City of Charlotte Parks & Recreation Department, after a beloved 31-year career overseeing sports, programs and events throughout the city. Tom was an avid sportsman in his youth, a hunter, a fisherman, and a great storyteller. He cultivated huge gardens, and grew some of the best tomatoes, watermelon, and corn around. He was a horseback rider, a golfer, and an antique car lover. He was a swimmer, a skier, and a sports fan—most notably a Wolfpacker for life. Tom was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather. He was a loyal son, brother, uncle, and cousin—and he loved all of his family dearly. He was a good friend and mentor to many throughout his career and community. He was quick with a smile, a joke, a prank, and a (really) firm hug. Tom was loyal and honest, quiet and gentle, good and kind. Tom is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne Shuping Moore, son Thomas H. Moore Jr. (Sandy), daughter Lee Anne Moore, sister Sue Von Moore (Janet Ford), granddaughter Nicole Anne Moore, and many extended family members. The family gives immeasurable thanks to Angeline Wah, Kristen Robbins, and Latavia Moore for their special care and compassion these past few months. Visitation will be 12pm-1pm on Wednesday, December 1st at the Heritage Funeral Home/Weddington location. Service to follow there at 1pm, with interment at the Historic Matthews Cemetery, thereafter. Heritage/Weddington is located at 3700 Forest Lawn Drive Matthews NC 28104, 704-846-3771.
