January 15, 1937 - November 21, 2021
Virginia Etheredge Hodgens (Dinny) passed away at the age of 84 on November 21, 2021 in Charlotte, NC where she lived for 54 years. Dinny was born and raised in Augusta, Ga, on January 15, 1937 to James Lee Etheredge, Jr. and Virginia Battey Etheredge. Dinny attended high school at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School in Washington D.C., and went on to college at The University of Miami where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and graduated with a degree in Education. She loved teaching children and went on to be an elementary school teacher in New York City and Atlanta, Ga. where she met her husband of 55 years, Donald J. Hodgens. Dinny and Don were married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Lady Chapel in New York in 1966, moved to Dallas, TX for a short time before settling in Charlotte to raise their family. She was a devoted wife and mother to her two children, Bryan and Virginia and six grandchildren. Dinny was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and had a passion for helping others and giving back to her community. She was a volunteer for years tutoring children at Eastover Elementary, Cotswold Elementary, The Cherry Community after school program and The Alexander Youth Network. She taught Sunday School at St. Gabriel Catholic Church and volunteered for a number of Catholic charities and the North Carolina Sisters of Mercy. She was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, the North Carolina Society of Colonial Dames, The Symphony Guild of Charlotte and Myers Park Country Club. Above all else, Dinny loved her family and especially her six grandchildren who brought her so much joy over the last 21 years. “Mama Dee” as she was fondly called, loved more than anything to be in the audience clapping or on the sidelines cheering for all of their many activities. She is survived by her husband Donald J. Hodgens; her son, Bryan Etheredge Hodgens (Katie) of Charlotte, NC; her daughter, Virginia Hodgens White (Ramsey) of Charlotte, NC; her grandchildren, Alex Hodgens, Davis Hodgens, Matthew Hodgens, Julia Hodgens, Virginia Grace White and Ramsey White, IV; her siblings, Grace Etheredge Higgs (Don) of Atlanta, Renee Etheredge McCarthy (Tim) of Virginia Beach, Va and J. Lee Etheredge, III (Janice) of Vero Beach, Fl. The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Embrace Health at Southminster who loved and cared for her over the last two and a half years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
