Wilma Jean Chapman

June 28, 1931 - March 23, 2022

Wilma Jean Chapman of Charlotte, NC passed away at the age of 90 on March 23, 2022 at home surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born in Bremen, KY on June 28, 1931 to the late William Bowers Shaver and Mary Florence Shaver. The daughter of a coal miner, Jean spent her childhood in Muhlenberg County, KY and graduated from Central City High School. She was married to the love of her life, the late Harold L. Chapman, for almost 54 years. Together they raised two beautiful children in a home that was full of love. Jean cherished her friendships and remained very close with several childhood friends throughout her life. Supporting her husband’s IBM career, they moved several times along the east coast, making many lifelong friendships with IBMers and others. Jean has been a member of Sharon United Methodist Church for 41 years. Jean was a woman who captured the hearts of many with her vibrant personality, tender heart and love for the Lord. For over 25 years, Jean and four of her dear friends walked in their neighborhood and enjoyed coffee together each morning. Jean was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making clothes, keepsakes and home goods with her daughter. She loved spending time with family and loved to laugh. Jean is survived by her daughter, Norma Jean Speakman (Bobby); grandchildren Andrew William Speakman (fiancée Sherry), Sarah Speakman Creekmuir (Chris) and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Harold Dean Chapman; and brothers William Donald Shaver and David Terry Shaver. The family will receive friends Monday, March 28, 2022 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home-Weddington Chapel at 3700 Forest Lawn Dr., Matthews, NC 28104. Funeral service celebrating the life of Mrs. Chapman will be at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, Matthews.
