May 4, 1932 - August 18, 2021
Carolyn Holt Browning, lovingly known as "Mudder", passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 18, 2021 after several years of declining health. She was born on May 4, 1932 to the late George Marvin Holt and Gladys Foushee Holt in Burlington, NC where she grew up. While attending Burlington High School, Carolyn was crowned Queen of the Alamance County Centennial Pageant by Governor Scott. She graduated from Stephens College in 1952 and was presented at the NC Debutante Ball in Raleigh. Carolyn settled in Charlotte where she raised her three boys. She began her successful real estate career with Allen Tate Realtors and retired after many years with Bissell Hayes, having made enduring friendships with coworkers and clients. Carolyn’s faith was a guiding star in her life. She was a founding member of Carmel Presbyterian Church, where she generously offered her time and talents as a Stephen Minister, a longtime Knowing the Word Sunday School member, a participant in Sit ‘N Stitch and the Amani Beads groups, and in countless other acts of kindness and love. For many years, Carolyn was a dedicated volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital’s cardiology center, where she provided support and solace to families with loved ones undergoing surgery. Her Kingswood home of over fifty years was a gathering place for family and friends who were welcomed by her warmth and hospitality. She loved the deep relationships and good times with all her neighbors, especially the Kingswood Bridge Club and Garden Club. A nature lover with a big heart for all God’s creatures, Carolyn fostered many dogs, cats, bunnies, turtles, squirrels, guinea pigs and chickens with her boys and then grandchildren. One of her favorite places was Litchfield Beach where she expressed her creative gifts through the craft projects and theatrical performances she coordinated for her grandchildren. Carolyn touched many lives with her gentle kindness, beauty, warmth and grace. As family members, she has and will continue to inspire us to be our best selves. Carolyn was predeceased by her brother, Marvin. She is survived by her three sons; Ed (Lisa), Holt (Donna Sue) and Ric (Ann); by six grandchildren; Kristofer Browning (Alex), Carolyn McNeilly (Tate), Wil Browning, Holt Browning (Brandon Bolton), Caroline Browning and Elizabeth Browning; and by two great grandsons, Laird Browning and Barron Bolton. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Billie Holt. Carolyn's family extends their gratitude to the caring staff at Matthews Glen, and to Melanie Terrano of Hospice of Charlotte, as well as Dr. Martin Cutrone and Dr. Maureen Andreassi. An informal service will be held at Carmel Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, September 1 at 3:00 PM to share God's blessings and grace and to give thanks for her wonderful life. Memorials may be made to Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226, Hospice of Charlotte (www.hpccr.org), or the The Green Beret Foundation (www.GreenBeretFoundation.org). Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home of Matthews: www.heritagecares.com.
