May 13, 1958 - April 29, 2022
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear Mayra Morales Casnettie. On April 29th, 2022, Mayra passed peacefully while surrounded by family. While Mayra’s spirit was strong, she ultimately succumbed to complications from congestive heart failure. Although her life seems cut short at almost 64 years old, Mayra lived a life full of love and joy. Mayra was born on May 13th, 1958, in Louisiana to parents Hector J. Morales and Genoveva Morales Rivera, originally from Puerto Rico. Her family eventually settled in Columbia, South Carolina where she graduated from Cardinal Newman High School and played on the basketball team. After graduating, she became a licensed beautician, inspired by her mother who had opened her own hair salon. It was through her profession that Mayra would meet a new client, Dennis Casnettie, who would later become her loving husband in 1982. After the birth of their first child, they moved to Charlotte and then to Matthews, where they would call home ever since. Mayra was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, and friend. She cut friends’ and neighbors’ hair, enjoyed playing tennis, attended book club, and developed long lasting friendships with neighbors, church parishioners, and tennis friends. She also loved visiting Kiawah Island every year with her family. In her later years, her health prevented her from being as active, but she continued gardening, baking, crocheting, and making rosaries for church. Her Catholic faith grew stronger every year that she lived, and she always prayedfor those in need. Mayra was preceded in death by her mother, sister Diane Morales, and her parents-in-law, Dewey & Margie Myers. In addition to her husband and her father, Mayra is survived by her sister, Elena Morales, brother Hector Morales Jr. (Courtney), and children, Nicole Casnettie (Javi Rodríguez Sánchez) and Daniel Casnettie (Samantha). In December 2021, Mayra’s newest source of pride and joy arrived in her grandson, Luke, who gifted her the coveted role of grandmother, or “abuelita”. She is also survived by nephews Kyle, Brandon, & Charlton, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends and neighbors. Visitation for Mayra will be on Thursday, May 5, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway, Charlotte, NC. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in the St. Matthew Catholic section. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Our Lady’s Rosary Makers Guild at St. Matthew Catholic Church.
